One Year In
We celebrated our first birthday of Mezze deli on Main Street Tramore on Saturday 6th of June. Our Middle Eastern food deli has had a fantastic year, and although times have changed with the coronavirus pandemic, we are optimistic about the future and enthusiastic as ever about what we do!
For those of you who don't know our story; Mezze was set up by me (Nicola) and my husband Dvir. We're an Irish/Israeli couple who has been living in Tramore for four years after relocating from Israel. We’d been doing the food festival and farmers market circuit for three years, we’d run pop up dinners around the country and built up a name so we felt ready for the next step to open our own place. When we saw the shop on Main Street come available we knew it was the perfect spot to set down roots.
We got to work creating a hub of Middle Eastern food; serving breakfast and lunch of Middle Eastern specialties such as falafel pita and Shakshuka (a Tunisian dish with eggs poached in a spiced tomato sauce), as well as serving up local Trá Coffee roasters coffee with sweet nut filled pastries of baklava.
We’ve used our base to run pop up dinners which have a different theme each time; our best-selling event which sold out in less than 24 hours was cooked up by Dvir’s visiting mother. The deli has also been transformed into a cookery school by night where we take participants through how to prepare some of their favourite Middle Eastern foods and then sit down to enjoy a feast.
Mezze wasn’t long open when we picked up national attention with Tom Doorley claiming that it "probably has the best Middle Eastern food in the country" (Daily Mail, September 2019). Katy McGuinness of the Sunday Independent listed Mezze as one of the top Middle Eastern restaurants in the country in February this year.
The Mezze team have also managed to pick up some prestigious awards over the year; the esteemed McKennas Guides award is displayed proudly on our shop front and a Shop of the Year 2020 trophy sits on our counter which we received just as the crisis hit.
We are optimistic about our future during these trying times for businesses. We have been very lucky that we were set up for takeaway before this happened so we ran we that, and our online shop was running and we’re now doing a lot of orders through that for both national delivery and click & collect orders for locals. We’re hoping to build on the online business over the coming months to keep us going for the next few months and beyond. We’ve also been lucky to have the support of locals who have kept the orders coming in and happily went along with changes we’ve had to make in our business the past two months.
Our working days have had to change due to a combination of kids and covid and we will continue to increase these hours as we go along. This week we're open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10am to 3pm. We are taking orders online for pick up at the deli on Friday. Have a look at our online shop to skip the queue and order in advance. As well as our mezze and falafel we have a Friday night dinner and local veg box which are available click and collect only.
