We thrilled and excited to hear that we have been named a finalist in Shop of the Year 2020! The Guild of Fine Food’s annual Shop of the Year awards, an accreditation scheme which recognises and promotes excellence in independent retail, has announced its finalists for 2020 and Mezze on Main Street, Tramore is among those in the running to win the Specialist Food Shop category. Woo hoo!
Our newly opened deli/shop specialises in Middle Eastern foods; stocking hard to come by ingredients such as za’atar and preserved lemons mixed with high quality locally produced ingredients such as White Mausu's peanut rayu and my dad's Kilmeaden honey. These gorgeous products can be picked up to whip up a quick mid-week dinner, incorporated into a full-on Ottolenghi-style Middle Eastern feast or made into a unique hamper as a gift. The Mezze team are always on hand to give cooking tips and recipes on how to use the products as well as running demos and dining events to learn more (see more info below on these).
Having had its written entry reviewed by a panel of respected industry experts, Mezze will now undergo two further rounds of judging, including an announced visit from one of the judges and a mystery shop carried out by Insight6.
From the overall shopping experience and financial performance to staff training opportunities and environmental initiatives, the panel of highly experienced judges, which includes Edward Berry of The Flying Fork, Stuart Gates, former managing director at Fortnum & Mason and senior buyer at Harrods, award-winning retailer Tracey Colley and food writer, Patrick McGuigan will rate, score and provide feedback on every aspect of Mezze before agreeing on an overall category winner. A Newcomer Award will be given to a worthy category entrant that has been trading for less than two years and any entrants considered to be leading the way with new ideas will be put forward for the Innovation Award.
Having opened our deli and shop just five months ago to be considered a finalist for Shop of the year out of all the specialist food shops in both Ireland and the UK is just unbelievable! We are hoping that this accreditation will put our small shop and our beautiful town on the map. There are so many great food initiatives happening in Tramore and we’re grateful to be part of it and for the support we get from our customers. We have our fingers and toes crossed that the visiting judges will like what they see!
Shop of the Year 2020 will reach its exciting finale on Monday 9 March, when the world of fine food gather at Fodder Farm Shop and Café in Harrogate, to find out the winners of each category.
